Sacla’ Eating Out – Today and Tomorrow Report

In order to build Sacla’s positioning and establish the business as a recognised foodservice player in the UK market, we needed to engage the most senior target clients and stimulate debate within their teams. We partnered with independent consumer foresight and futures consultancy – Trajectory - to produce a new research report, which provided fresh, evidence-based thinking on the trends that will drive the future of foodservice.
The report was based on primary research from interviews with 2,034 adults exploring their lifestyles, plus their relationship with food and eating-out. In addition, we secured key industry figures to comment on the findings of the report including:

  • Barry Vera, Chef Director at The ONE Group
  • Kate Nicholls, Chief Executive of the ALMR
  • Peter Martin, Vice-President of CGA Peach
  • Steve Richards, CEO of Casual Dining Group
  • Tim Martin, Chairman of JD Wetherspoon

To add further impact, we coordinated a briefing event to launch the report to trade press and present key findings. The report was also distributed more widely, resulting in hundreds of senior industry figures requesting a copy, from companies such as including Mitchells & Butlers, Bidvest Foodservice, Pizza Express, KFC, Nando's, Coca-Cola and Wahaca amongst others.

The report successfully positioned Sacla' as the business that provides the foodservice solutions of the future, because of its deep understanding of the consumer and when, where, how and why people go out to eat.

Vianet-Cask Marque Beer Quality Report

Consumers are demanding higher quality products, and nowhere is this more evident than in the beer sector where quality remains at the top of drinkers' agenda.

By utilising data from Vianet and Cask Marque we produced a report giving a definitive assessment of draught beer quality in the on-trade. This found the delivery of consistent beer quality across the on-trade is patchy at the best of times.

The report highlights that as consumers continue to demand higher quality products, the partnership between brewery and pub is more critical than ever to ensure great beer every time.

The report warns that pub operators are losing out on a potential £709m of profit due to beer quality issues from cellar to glass.

Leading trade journalists and influential beer bloggers attended an exclusive launch event and were given the opportunity to hear the headline findings and discuss with Vianet in more detail.

This was the second annual report on quality, combining Vianet’s ability to monitor beer quality remotely 24/7, 365 days a year with Cask Marque’s bi-annual pub visit data, which reviews the whole operation, from cellar to glass. FSC compiled and edited the report, analysing the data and offering an in-depth view of the key drivers of quality, raising a number of important questions for operators.

Wing Yip Oriental Food Report

Established in 1969 Wing Yip started by selling just a few Chinese ingredients, over 40 years later, the company sells over 4,500 products from across South East Asia. In order to position Wing Yip as the authority in Oriental foods the brief was to demonstrate the company’s extensive knowledge of the sector. Shopping habits are changing with consumers becoming more adventurous, Wing Yip wanted to further understand and highlight what is driving this change, where opportunities lie and identify future trends.

We conducted a qualitative and quantitative research project securing 19 in depth executive interviews with leading industry figures, operators and chefs as well as surveying over 3,000 UK adults. We also incorporated industry statistics from analysts Horizons and CGA Peach.

The results provide a detailed look at consumer attitudes and industry trends and directions, the influences on taste, flavour and eating habits and demonstrate that the UKs love for Oriental food continues to grow.

The project was a great success; we launched the report with an exclusive event, presenting the findings to 10 tier one trade journalists and influencers.

Our objective was to firmly position Wing Yip as industry leaders and producing the report has certainly set us on the right path. The report is set to become a biennial initiative.

AlixPartners Growth Company Index

AlixPartners is a leading global business advisory firm. For the past five years, the company has produced the Growth Company Index, an annual report tracking the 50 fastest-growing companies in the UK’s dynamic eating and drinking-out market.

In that time, the market has weathered challenging times in the wake of the 2009 downturn and then entered a period of dramatic growth. The on-going rise of fast casual and all-day dining, and a constant stream of innovative concepts and creative venues, plus a revitalised bar and pub scene mean that the £80bn market for eating and drinking-out remains dynamic and ‘hot’.

However, this edition was published at interesting time for the market. After a period of significant expansion for food-led businesses, as evidenced by the growth figures being delivered by some companies in the report, there is a sense that the market is pausing in the wake of the Brexit vote – to get an understanding of its real impact before recommitting to rollout programmes.

The index ranked companies in the sector according to profit growth, as measured over three sets of annual company figures, with The Breakfast Club – the licensed all-day café concept launched in London’s Soho in 2005 – topping the list. The report also featured analysis from leading industry commentators and an in-depth interview with Chris Hill, managing director of New World Trading Company, which ranked in the list.

Each year, Fleet Street Communications has project managed the production of the report, liaising with researchers, devising and drafting the editorial, and then ensuring maximum impact with key audiences, and exposure through the press, when the report is published.
