It’s fair to say that I’m known in the Fleet Street team for my complete infatuation with beer. Most Fridays (post-6pm) you’ll either find me in a south London curry house with a bottle of IPA and a vindaloo, or at a local pub sipping a pint of hoppy ale.
So it was no surprise that I jumped at the chance to receive official beer training earlier this year.
In February 2015 I attended the Beer Academy Foundation course. I learnt all about the history of beer, how to taste beer
and how beer is brewed. Then in July I was given the opportunity to expand my knowledge and I attended the Advanced Beer Academy course. I discovered how to pair beer with food, gained further understanding about flavour identification, learnt how to detect spiked beers – and the science behind this, plus much, much more.
The most fascinating part of both courses for me, was learning about brewing, and I was so interested in the process, that it has inspired me to give home brewing a go (!)
What’s more, I’ve recently made it my mission to visit as many breweries as possible in order to further my knowledge
(and to steal a few tips!). I’ve since ticked off Fullers, Meantime, Kernel and Carlsberg breweries from my ‘breweries to visit’
list and plan to tick off quite a few more as quickly as possible. I’m very excited to continue with my beer education, while also experimenting with all the fantastic beers the world has to offer!
